"The Goddess Denied" is a fabulous continuation of Davitt's Valkyrie series. I was blown away by the first book, and this second book was equally amazing. Davitt weaves mythology, history, and science to create an alternate world where the gods are real, magic exists and obeys the laws of physics, and Rome never fell. The result is an incredibly rich, detailed, and satisfying story that is equally epic fantasy, alternate history, and hard science fiction. At the same time, the main characters are believable and compelling. For the most part we stay with the characters introduced in the first book, but Sigrun's sister Sophia moves more into the foreground, as her tragedy becomes the central tension and final denouement of the work.I am hesitant to make any final judgments about a series that I haven't finished yet, so I'll hold off on an in-depth discussion of Davitt's depiction of female characters. But briefly: the series has a number of wonderful female characters; Sigrun of course, but also Sophia, Minori, Fritti, Reginleif, Erida, Zaya, and so on. That being said, so far there has been an undercurrent of distrust for independent women, and a positioning of the women as slightly subordinate to their men (I was strongly reminded of Battlestar Galactica in this regard, and I think there are a lot of similarities), which may seem strange in such a story, but is definitely present. And I have to note that the only Russian woman is evil, evil, evil! However, the series also seems to be leading to

several of the female characters, including Sigrun, becoming deities and standing up against the Olympian gods, who, as the characters so rightly note, are horrible rapists and usurpers, so this could all be reversed in the final volume. In any case, this is a very worthy addition to the fantasy AND sci-fi genres, and I strongly recommend it to anyone who enjoys those genres.

This is one of the most singularly engaging stories that I have ever read. The masterful development of a hefty cast of characters woven into the epic saga of an approaching apocalypse makes this series a must-read.
I really enjoyed this series.
Amazingly consistent and gripping.
Difficult to gush suitably with our giving out spoilers.
My heart aches for the characters as they strive to lay hold on happiness where they can in an increasingly darker world.
Fascinating alternate history and technologies
Kind of a heart-rending reveal near the end before a frustrating (in a good way) cliffhanger.
Well developed characters and world, to say nothing of the interactions.
Love this series. I’ve read it three times now. I keep working to get more people to read this because it changed my life. Thank you so much for this wonderful series.
Once again Ms. Davitt has raised the bar. The second installment of Edda-Earth is a more than fitting second chapter in the saga. However this book is more than just a waystation between the introduction of the world and the awaited climax. This book allows the reader to live with the characters. The journey Ms. Davitt takes us on spans half a life of most mere mortals. We experience their danger, their everyday lives, their joy and their sorrow. Ms. Davitt respects her characters, the world she built, the nature of people and of history. But most of all she respects her readers. We are not spoon fed, this is as much a journey for us as it is for the characters. Few authors can pull this off. Ms. Davitt has done it twice in as many books. Bravo. Now get on with publishing the third installment already. I'm starting to twitch.
Where "The Valkyrie" introduces the unknown world of Edda-Earth, "The Goddess Denied" brings said world to its knees, and in turn, reveals a lot more than one would expect. But such is the genius of Deborah Davitt.
The magnitude of Edda-Earth is displayed in this second book through the arrival of new characters, creatures and events spanning a long and realistic timeline, where causality and impact are reflected in every page. Battles are foreseen, fought and won; and lost, too. The hearts and minds of characters I have come to love in the first part of the trilogy are further explored and understood. Mysteries are solved and mysteries are discovered. The story again leads the reader into a fantastic immersion.
And in the end, you cannot help but be moved by every aspect of the story.
An even more engaging read, which gives much credit to the author's skill. I am now eagerly and impatiently awaiting the third book!
I just finished The Goddess Denied this morning, and all I can say is.....wow. That was a journey; gut punches and highs. I don't mind admitting I teared up at parts, and had to put it down and just giggle at what was happening in others. I was never bored, even though this is a massive novel.
Besides the superb technical details, what most impressed me so far has been the author's ability to plan, to foreshadow without it becoming heavy-handed. You can tell that she has the outline of the story planned in her head, and this makes all the difference in the world-building.
Those of my friends and family who got copies of The Valkyrie are getting this as well (either on the strength of my recommendation, or when I buy if for them myself.)
I cannot wait for the next!
